Smurfette – A Sorted History

[Source Wikipedia] Smurfette was created by Gargamel, the Smurfs’ enemy. He created her to distract the other Smurfs so he could trap them. Papa Smurf then rescued Smurfette and turned her into the real Smurf that she should be. She was the only female Smurf until the creation of Sassette. A Granny Smurf was also later introduced, although it is unclear how she was created. Thierry Culliford, the son of Peyo and current head of the Studio Peyo, announced in 2008 that more female Smurfs would be introduced in the stories. Smurfette has more delicate features than the other Smurfs, with long blonde wavy hair, longer eyelashes, and wears a white dress and white high heels. She is the love interest of almost every Smurf.

The adventure of the Smurfette first started in Spirou magazine in 1966. She was made by Gargamel as a means to sow unrest in the Smurf village. When this was discovered, Papa Smurf succeeded in turning her into a real Smurf, altering her appearance at the same time. She still was a source of envy between the Smurfs though, and at the end of this story she left the Smurf village, thus restoring the status quo of an all-male community. She made the occasional on-off appearance, but when the animated TV series of the Smurfs was introduced in the 1980′s she was featured as a permanent character, appearing in stories in which she was not included in the original source comics. Thus the comics also started to feature her as a permanent character.

Hal Erickson said in Television Cartoon Shows: An Illustrated Encyclopedia 1949-1993 that the reintroduction of Smurfette as a permanent character in the animated series was “bowing to merchandising dictates” in order to “appeal to little girl toy consumers.” Jeffrey P. Dennis, author of the journal article “The Same Thing We Do Every Night: Signifying Same-Sex Desire in Television Cartoons,” said that the inclusion of Smurfette in the cartoon version of The Smurfs was likely to serve as an object of heterosexual desire for the other Smurfs and to end speculation arguing that the Smurfs were homosexual. In a response to Dennis’s statements, Martin Goodman of Animation World Network, said that Dennis had not taken into account Erickson’s comments about merchandising. Goodman further argued that capturing the young female audience would increase ratings, so the networks were more likely trying to pander to young girls than trying to defuse accusations of homosexuality; Smurfette was the most frequently merchandised of the Smurfs.

Gargamel and Azrael

[Source Wikipedia] Gargamel is a man who is perpetually stooped. His dark robe is worn and patched, and his teeth are rotten. He is a misanthrope, hating pretty much everyone and the Smurfs in particular, though he will sometimes feign friendship if there is something in it for him. He is also an abject coward, surrendering or fleeing upon the merest hint of personal risk or harm. He is apparently named after Gargamelle, the mother of Gargantua in François Rabelais’ mock-epic novel sequence The Life of Gargantua and of Pantagruel, although Gargamel was a common name in medieval France.

Gargamel lives in a run-down, though solidly built hovel with his mangy cat Azrael. Gargamel frequently denigrates, insults, and abuses Azrael, but he does in fact love him. In one episode of The Smurfs, Gargamel is depressed and saddened that Azrael had run away, and wishes he would come back. In another episode, Balthazar wants to kill a wildcat that Azrael befriended for his fur, and Gargamel begged him not to.

Gargamel is an eternal bungler. Some of his schemes to catch Smurfs border on the bizarre (such as a “blue magnet” that attracted solely blue items), though he does have rare moments of genius (the creation of Smurfette, for one). He has a seemingly endless library of spellbooks, potions, and gimmicks for his life’s passion. However, no matter how elaborate Gargamel’s plans, they invariably end in failure, causing him to spout his catch phrase: ”I hate those Smurfs!”. Sometimes he will also throw a temper tantrum, and howl in grief that ”I am brave and strong and they are puny and weak, and why can’t I defeat those miserable vile little Smurfs?!” However, his defeats never discourage him, and he always vows, ”I’ll get you if it’s the last thing I do!” (it is worth noting that he possibly does have softer feelings towards at least one Smurf, his daughter/creation Sassette, who refers to him as “Pappy Gargamel”.

When Gargamel first appeared in Le Voleur de schtroumpf (“The Smurfnapper”), published in 1959, he captured a smurf which he needed as an ingredient for a potion to make gold in accordance with the famed alchemic legend of the Philosopher’s Stone. The other smurfs rallied against him, freed the kidnapped smurf and the sorcerer was defeated and humiliated. Gargamel swore revenge: from now on the conflict would be personal.

Sometimes he wants to eat the Smurfs, other times he wants to use them to make gold, and still other times he has even more bizarre uses for them (in one instance he is so enraged by his loss that he yells “I don’t want to eat them, I don’t want to turn them into gold, all I want now is to DESTROY THEM!”). Though he often catches Smurfs who wander by his home or which he happens across in the forest, he does not know the location of the hidden Smurf village, a fact which continually frustrates him.

On some occasions, he has discovered the location of the village, but sooner or later gets led away from it due to either a magic spell put on him by Papa Smurf or because of some other bizarre factor. Sometimes it is simply a matter of his being led away from the village while chasing the Smurfs, losing them and then being unable to find his way back.

On one occasion his obsessive search led him to explore the deepest caves, the muddiest marshlands and even going far out to sea. He was just about to give up and go home when, quite by chance, he did finally find the village — but, as always, circumstances were against him.

There were a few times in the series that Gargamel was on the same side as the Smurfs. In “Fountain of Smurf”, Papa Smurf becomes a smurfling and the only way the Smurfs can get him back to normal is with Gargamel’s help.

To try and cause trouble to the Smurfs, Gargamel has created other Smurfs, most notably Smurfette. Smurfette was adopted by the Smurfs, but Sassette the smurfling, who the other smurflings created, was made from the same clay that Gargamel used for Smurfette. Sassette refers to Gargamel as “Pappy Gargamel” and she is the only one in Smurf village who wishes to see some good in him.

Gargamel has also worked with other enemies of the Smurfs, although in many cases these other villains, such as Lord Balthazar, prove to be much more efficient and focused enemies of the Smurfs, and even so much as smash their alliance with Gargamel and enslave him.

Not much is said of Gargamel’s relationships with women, although in one episode an ugly witch named Hogatha turns herself into an attractive woman in order to steal an earring Gargmel bought for his mothers birthday which held special powers. She almost succeeds, but her constant transformations from ugly to beautiful prove to be too hard for her, and Gargamel eventually is informed of the ruse. One time, Gargamel almost actually got married. His “mummy” decided it was high time he took a wife and introduced him to a lovely princess, who didn’t really love him. He didn’t really have any feelings for the princess either, until he saw in her hope chest a definitive map to the Smurf Village and then proclaimed his love for her and accepted her hand in marriage. (Of course, he still didn’t love her, just the map to the Smurf Village.) Fortunately for the future Mrs. Gargamel (and the Smurfs’ well-being), some Smurfs showed up to the wedding and wrought enough havoc as to ruin the wedding completely.

Papa Smurf Characteristics

At 542 years old Papa Smurf is the third-oldest Smurf after Grandpa Smurf and Nanny Smurf. He is quite energetic for his age, and is easily distinguished from the other Smurfs by his red clothes and his bushy white beard, which was brown in his younger days.

[source Wikipedia]…Papa Smurf is a gentle, wise, and knowledgeable village elder. He serves as the Smurfs’ leader, and serves as a paternal figure to whom the Smurfs usually go when they require counsel. He is always concerned about the Smurf’s well-being and harmony. He is very altruistic and always ready to help somebody, whether Smurf or human. Papa Smurf also has diplomatic skills in case the Smurfs meet humans or other creatures. Unlike other Smurfs, he usually manages to speak without replacing nouns and verbs with the word “smurf”. In the original comic books by Peyo, Papa Smurf had a more forceful personality and a short temper, often getting angry with his Smurfs when they did something wrong or were not obeying his orders.

Papa Smurf’s duty is to ensure all the Smurfs of the village get along well, are nice to each other, and do not fight. When real chaos rises among them, Papa Smurf takes very drastic measures, often using magic. For example he has switched bodies with Gargamel in order to pretend to attack the village on several occasions, including in the Smurf Versus Smurf comic adventure and the “Romeo & Smurfette” TV episode, and has even created a whole other village of evil doubles of the original Smurfs in The Smurf Menace” comic issue.

When he is not engaged in his leadership role, Papa Smurf indulges in his favorite hobby of magical chemistry, or alchemy. He often makes elixirs to help Smurfs who get themselves into trouble. The French comic portrays Papa Smurf constantly preparing magical drinks from white hellebore; the drawings in which the effects of these alchemical brews are shown are both turbulent and amusing. Separate from his house, he has a laboratory containing several chemical devices, and he tries to create potions for the good of the Smurfs, yet sometimes fails. For example, one time he accidentally created a substance that turned any living thing into a huge monster (refer to The Smurfs and the Cracoucass album, and the cartoon episode “The Smurfs and the Howlibird”). Impassioned by his love of magical chemistry, he occasionally leaves the village in order to get the needed ingredients.

Snoopy’s Street Fair Friends started in November and is about to cross over into 2000 fans. I am honored to be able to bring the world together in a common bond. In this case it happens to be Smurfs and Snoopy. I have heard countless times of the friendships and love created because of what I have done with SVFriends and SSFFriends. I am simply adding TheTechSpoon to my portfolio of world dominance! hahaha

One year ago today, Geoff Walton, aka G-Daddy Smurf, created this wonderful world you know as Smurf Village Friends. What started out as a cozy, Facebook nook for friends to talk about the phenomenon that is Smurfs’ Village, exploded into a community of 23,500+ fans strong with its own contests, handbook and website!

The above picture is actually our very first profile pic that served as our masthead until we decided to make it your contest pictures. Afterall, it’s the “Friends” in Smurf Village Friends that make us great!

So today is a celebration not only for Geoff and the people that keep SVF smurfing (Nicole Simon, Tiffanie Miller, Samm Khoury, etc) but for you the fans that keep us going! Thank you and we hope to keep “uniting the world one Smurf at a time” for many more years to come!
